Founded in 2024 by Luca Alinovi and Fabrizio Cardillo, Aflabox was international from the outset, developing a technology designed to address a global challenge: making food safety and quality testing faster, more accessible and closer to where agricultural products are produced, stored and traded.
The startup has developed a portable “field intelligence” platform capable of detecting mycotoxins and assessing the quality and safety of cereals and other agricultural commodities directly in the field. The system combines portable hardware, UV and white-light imaging, artificial intelligence, geolocated data and cloud-based dashboards.
According to the company, a scan can generate a digital result in less than 90 seconds, significantly reducing the time required by conventional laboratory testing.
The technology focuses in particular on aflatoxins and other mycotoxins, toxic substances produced by fungi that can contaminate crops such as maize and cereals, posing risks to food safety while also reducing the commercial value of agricultural products.
The €1.35 million funding round was completed through FoodSeed, the agrifood accelerator within CDP Venture Capital’s National Accelerator Network and managed by Eatable Adventures, with the participation of Farming Future, the National Agrifood Tech Technology Transfer Hub promoted by CDP Venture Capital in partnership with ToSeed & Partners.
The investment will support device validation and certification, further development of Aflabox’s AI platform, the creation of a micro-factory and international commercial expansion. The company is targeting markets including Italy, Kenya and Nigeria, while building distribution partnerships across Africa and Europe.
