AlmaPlasma is a company that aims to design, manufacture and market advanced technological solutions in the field of atmospheric pressure thermal and non-thermal plasmas, developed by the Industrial Applications of Plasma (IAP) group at the University of Bologna.

In vitro cell cultivation is a widely applied technology worldwide in the fields of pharmacology, cosmetics, diagnostics, and research, normally using foetal bovine serum (FBS) as a nutrition source. However, its use is subject to the limitations of high and constantly rising costs, and some ethical issues since the production process is mainly based outside of the European continent.

A UNIBO spin-off born of a collaboration between a Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering professor and four of its researchers.

The company activity consists in research, development, production, and marketing of cosmetics for personal care and beauty, based on Italian milk whey of animal origin, obtained through a cheese making process. The innovation lies in the use of liquid rather than freeze-dried whey as the main ingredient, unlike products currently on the market, completely substituting water.
