ZENIT Smart Polycrystals

ZENIT's business idea of Smart Polycrystals is based on the production and sale of polycrystals for the solid state laser (SSL) machine market.

Existing SSL systems have high manufacturing costs and the machines are heavy and bulky. These laser beams are generated by a single-crystal that heats up locally during laser emission, causing the temporary deformation of the crystalline cell, degrading the quality of the beam and reducing its efficiency.

To resolve this problem ZENIT offers polycrystals of variable chemical composition and designed to dissipate heat, thus minimizing thermal gradients and the deformation of the crystalline cell.

ZENIT polycrystals are more efficient and less expensive, also reducing operating costs and with the possibility for machine miniaturization.

ZENIT also provide polycrystals for the scintillation detector market and the emerging market for vehicle laser headlights.

The idea is the result of ten years of research in ceramic polycrystals for optical applications conducted by the founders of ZENIT at the laboratories of the Institute of Science and Technology for Ceramics of the National Research Council (CNR ISTEC).

This institute, founded in 1965 in Faenza, plays a primary role in research and development of advanced materials.

The protagonists of ZENIT are three researchers from CNR ISTEC with an overall experience of more than 60 years in advanced ceramic materials, whose research has to date attracted financing of 1.5 million EUR in more than 10 European, international, and national competitions, as well as industrial contracts.

They recently filed a patent claim for the realization of transparent ceramic polycrystals of complex shapes of graduated or multiple compositions.

The company project was a finalist in the 2020 edition of StartCup Emilia Romagna and will represent the Emilia-Romagna Region for the National Innovation Prize (PNI).
